Running the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool

The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool can be run from a web browser, and can be used to clean malicious software off of your computer.  This tool is updated monthly, and comes to you automatically as part of your monthly Windows Updates - provided your computer is set to automatically receive updates.  If you want to run this tool anytime, however, you can simply go to the web link for the tool and follow the procedure below.

 Procedure:

  1. Go to the web site listed above and click on the Skip the details and run the tool link for as shown in the image below:

 

  1. OR - read through the description and continue to scroll down the page until you see as shown in the image below.  Click on the Check My PC for Infection button.

 

  1. Next, agree to the license agreement and click Continue as shown in the figure below:

 

  1. If the yellow bar appears at the top of the web browser, click on it, then click Install to install the required Active X control.  If this happens, after the control installs, you may have to repeat starting at Step 2. above.

 

 

  1. When the tool completes running the following will appear.  Scan down the list and ensure that they all say Not Infected.  If any show infection, click on the underlined link and that particular infection will be cleaned.

 

  1. If any infections are found, and once they are cleaned by this tool, run a complete virus scan on your computer.
