"Those who can, do.
Those who care, teach."
Although I have seen that phrased differently, that statement, as
modified to its present form, has valuable meaning for me. I feel very strongly about
teaching. I have already retired from one career, and now feel it is time to help
prepare the next generation for what they will face in the world of work and
technology. When I see you in my classroom, I see the future.
I see possibilities for things that haven't been invented yet, I see
potentials for technologies that do not even exist yet, and I see
the excitement of what is to come. This excitement comes from
the fact that I know that you will somehow have a part in all that.
That is why I feel so strongly about motivating you to be curious
and life-long learners.
I also feel very strongly about the fact that education, and the
attitudes toward education are changing and need to continue to change. Students
in years gone by had gotten too used to the fact
that an educator's role was to stand in front of a class and lecture all day long. Learning is all about taking an active part in education, and
being
involved! You need to look beyond your text book, be
curious and inquisitive, and engage in
meaningful
discussions of the course material in order to get the most out of it.
Probably the best way to get to know me, and my attitudes toward
teaching, is to read some of the things I have begun collecting (see the links below).
Some I have written myself, and some are articles and such that I have collected
because they seemed to make sense to me.
I will warn you, however. If you are one to have your
feelings easily hurt, some of the included links may "strike a nerve" with you.
That is good. If something you read makes you stop and think, then I have
done my job. In any case, try to look upon these messages as a way to reflect
inwardly, and change that which you have control over. So much is beyond our
control, these days. But, how we act, and how we choose to engage in our livelihood
is solely up to us! |
